Virginia M. (Lord) Tierney of Melrose, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Greenbrier Terrace Healthcare Center of Nashua, NH. She was 87 years of age. Born on October 26, 1922, in Cambridge, MA, a daughter to the late Clarence & Lillian (McDonough) Lord, she was raised in Melrose and a graduate from Melrose High School in 1940. She became a Registered Nurse, working at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital for 8 years. Ginny then left the hospital to raise her family but continued to care for the neighborhood kids when anyone would get hurt. She enjoyed all crafts, knitting, crocheting and traveling with her husband and kids. Mrs. Tierney was the devoted wife of the late John A. Tierney, Jr., with whom they shared 49 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of James C. Tierney of Redwood, CA, & Marie L. Grazulis & her husband William of Meadows of Dan, Virginia, William J. Tierney of Crystal River, FL. & Linda A. John F. Macklin, of Melrose, died at the Golden Living Center in Melrose on March 1, 2010 at the age of 71. John was born in Worcester, raised in Malden and graduated from Reading High School and Merrimack College. He worked as a Draftsman for Teledyne Tac of Woburn for 8 years and Minuteman Transit of Norwood for over 10 years. John was the loving father of Lisa Macklin of N. Chelmsford and David Macklin of Woburn. Cherished son of the late Earl L. & Elizabeth M. (Quail) Macklin. Former husband of Beverly J. (Brewer) Macklin of Tuscan AZ. Madeline J. (Jaquith) Edmonds, of Melrose, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Wakefield Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was 90 years of age. Born on July 10, 1919, a daughter to the late Fred & Margaret (Toner) Jaquith, she was raised in Brighton and a graduate of Brighton High School and Stratton Jr. College. Madeline was a resident of Melrose for 55 years and a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church of Wakefield. She worked as a bookkeeper with Dana Real Estate of Boston for a few years, New England Construction Devices, Inc., was very active in Women in Construction and was the secretary to the board for 15 years. Later, she worked for McCaulley Vacuums of Melrose for 5 years as the office manager and accountant. Mrs. Edmonds was the beloved wife of Walter L. Edmonds. Cherished mother of Deborah E. James H. “Jim” D’Entremont Jr. passed away suddenly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, on Tuesday, February 16th at the age of 59. He was born in Malden, raised in Medford, graduated from Medford High School in 1968 and Suffolk University in Boston. Jim has been a resident of Melrose for the past 22 years and has been extremely involved with the community. He has been a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church where he participated on the parish council, was the coordinator of altar servers and was a Eucharistic Minister. Mr. D’Entremont has coached girls basketball at St. Mary’s School for the past 6 years and was a Melrose Youth Soccer coach for 10 years. Jim worked as a salesman for Riverside Pipe & Supply Company for several years, the Eljer Company for 20 years and the past 7 years at AKR Company of CT. He was a gentleman with a big heart, a great sense of humor, an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed golfing. Jim was the devoted father of James H. D’Entremont III and Katie Lee D’Entremont both of Melrose. Loving son of Janet (Bernardi) D’Entremont of Medford and the late James H. Helen E. (Nee) Wright passed away at Brigham & Women’s Hospital on Monday, February 15, 2010. She was 78 years of age. Mrs. Wright was born in Milford, MA, raised in Maynard, graduated from Maynard High School in 1949 and then from the College of Our Lady of The Elms in Chicopee. Helen moved to Melrose in 1961 and has been a resident ever since. Mrs. Wright worked as a chemist at the New England Medical Center in Boston for over 20 years, retiring in 1992. Helen was a proud member of the Democratic City Committee, enjoyed politics and was involved in numerous political campaigns; the John F. Kennedy campaign, Dukakis campaign as well as several local campaigns. She was a member of the Elections Committee for several years and worked the polls in Melrose on Election Day. Mrs. Wright loved her trips to Cape Cod, Montreal & Quebec and was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church. Helen was the wife of 55 years to Edmund F. Wright. Mother of Julie A. McLaughlin & her husband Daniel, Edmund F. Wright Jr. & his wife Janet, Gerald J. Wright & his wife Pamela all of Andover. Sister of Shelia Harris of Worcester. Thomasina (Ciulla) Pezzarossi of Melrose, died on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Annemark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Revere. She was 90 years of age. Born on March 5, 1919, in Boston, a daughter to the late Thomas Ciulla who passed away one week before Thomasina was born and Nancy Ciulla. She was raised in Everett and a graduate of Everett High School. She worked in the Schraft’s Candy Company of Charlestown for a few years and then as a Bookkeeper with the Algy Shoe Company of Everett for 12 years. Mrs. Pezzarossi was a resident of Melrose for 49 years and a founding member of the Church of the Incarnation of Melrose. She enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bowling, reading, swimming in her pool and bocce games in her backyard court. Thomasina was the devoted wife of the late Battista F. “Fred” Pezzarossi, with whom they shared 60 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Thomas J. Pezzarossi & his wife Karen of Melrose. Dr. Louis F. Alfano, 1921-2010
Dr. Louis F. Alfano, prominent Massachusetts physician of Melrose and Falmouth, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010, at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Alfano was born in 1921 in Boston's South End and raised in Roslindale. He graduated from Boston Latin School in 1939, received his BS degree from Boston College in 1943 and his MD from Tufts University Medical School in 1946. For over 60 years, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology delivering over 10, 000 babies in his career. He was a member of the Staff at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for 55 years until his retirement in 2005. During that time he served as President of Staff, Chairman and member of numerous committees. He was instrumental in establishing the 24-hour physician-run emergency services, the area’s first surgical day care services.
Dr Alfano was involved in medical politics and health policy development in the State of Massachusetts. While serving as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society he established the first physician referral service. He was Chairman of the Committee on Legislation where he was influential in shaping health care in the State. Dr. Alfano was founding incorporator of Bay State Health Plan, the first physician-run HMO in Massachusetts.
He was an active Member of the American Medical Association (AMA) where he served as Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates. During his dedicated affiliation with AMA, he participated in a record 88 consecutive bi-annual meetings.
For 15 years Dr Alfano served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of Massachusetts. He played a critical role when Blue Shield and Blue Cross merged into one company. He was Chair of the committee that reviewed and approved medical procedures and a member of numerous other committees.
Dr. Alfano was a founding member of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons in 1958 and he served as President, Executive Secretary and Trustee over the years.
He served in the US Navy from 1943 until his discharge in 1947.
Notwithstanding his numerous obligations to his patients and medical practice, Louis was a devoted husband and father. He and his wife Ella were married for 62 years. Many of his happiest memories involved family gatherings during holidays and summers on Cape Cod. Dr. Alfano is survived by his wife, six children and their spouses, twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild.

Thomas Joseph “TJ” Rice passed away suddenly at his home in Malden, on Friday, February 12, 2010 at the age of 46. TJ was born in Medford, raised in Melrose and graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1981. Mr. Rice lived in Malden for the past 14 years and summered in Barnstead, NH on Locke Lake for the past 6 years before moving to Barnstead permanently last year. He was the founder and owner of Rice Landscaping for the past 14 years. TJ was a hard working husband and father who cherished the times spent with his family. He liked going on trips, spending time on the lake, jet skiing and taking trips with his girls. TJ also loved his dog Jenieve. Mr. Rice was the loving husband of Janice L. (Guarino) Rice. Rose (Pittella) DelGreco passed away at Bear Hill Rehab & Nursing Center in Wakefield, on Friday, February 12, 2010. She was 82 years of age. She was born in East Boston on May 2, 1927 to the late Joseph & Maria (Nesci) Pittella. Rose was raised in East Boston, graduated from Boston Trade School and worked as a seamstress for several years in the garment district in Boston. Mrs. DelGreco was a homemaker who enjoyed shopping, walking in downtown Melrose with her friends and spending time with her family. She has been a resident of Melrose for the past 46 years and loved going to the Melrose Senior Center to dance & sing. Rose was the wife of Pasquale DelGreco. Mother of P. Paul D. Carlberg passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at his home in Melrose. He was 71 years of age. Paul was born in Melrose on November 29, 1938 to the late Carl & Vera (Lindell) Carlberg. He was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School, Class of 1956. Paul moved back to Melrose in 1961 and has been a resident for the past 49 years. He served in the US Army National Guard for 3 years. Mr. Carlberg worked as a banker for County Savings Bank & Atlantic Savings Bank both in Chelsea for many years and then for East Boston Savings Bank for several years. Paul was a longtime member of the Melrose Fish & Game Club; he enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. Mr. Carlberg loved the times spent at his home on Old Ham Pond in Pembroke where he summered since he was 2 years old. Paul was the beloved husband of the late Edna R. (Williams) Carlberg. Rose E. Walker passed away in the Wingate at Reading Nursing Home, on Friday, February, 12, 2010. She was 93 years of age. Rose was born in Charlestown on August 8, 1916 to the late William & Rose (Farron) Fleming. She was raised in Medford and graduated from Medford High School, Class of 1934. In 1943 she enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served during WWII for 3 years. After her discharge she moved to Japan in 1948 and worked as a budget analyst for the US Army for many years. Rose moved to Saugus in 1988 and has been a resident ever since. Mrs. Walker enjoyed traveling all over the world, music, photography, was an avid reader and was very active with the missions overseas. Rose was the loving adoptive daughter of the late Neil & Elizabeth Walker. Priscilla Marie (Paquett) Blades of Melrose, died on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital. She was 82 years of age. Born on December 17, 1927 in Boston to the late Edmond & Emelda (Mercier) Paquett, she was raised in East Boston & Somerville. Priscilla graduated from Somerville High School, class of 1940. She worked as a bus driver for Special Needs Children in Melrose for 10 years and then as a Lunch Mother in St. Mary’s School of Melrose and the Rosevelt School of Melrose for 15 years. Priscilla enjoyed talking about her family, playing cards, Bingo, baking and cooking. She was the devoted wife of Joseph R. Blades, Sr. with whom they shared 61 years of marriage.
